As a boy I had a facility for drawing and a good imagination. When I got older I thought I was going to be an illustrator but I found that as soon as I was given any sort of brief to follow it made me lose interest. Later I realized it was important for me to have no fixed agenda. It was only as I left art school that I freed up enough to let the materials I was working with guide me. For me, being an artist is a journey of self-discovery. If it chimes with somebody else, that is great, but it is a by-product. I paint and draw to discover what I like and dislike- what is good and bad in me- where work needs to be done and where I need to heal. I use subjects from the world around me and from my imagination, so hover between so-called realism and so-called abstraction quite fluidly as between waking and dreaming. Everything is connected and all my pictures are stepping stones towards a final life’s work who’s form will only really take it’s final form in retrospect.
